Florida Cross-Docking, Run by a Dedicated Delivery Carrier Since 1977

Cross-Docking in Florida

Cross-docking is the practice of moving freight directly from an inbound truck onto an outbound truck, with little or no time spent in storage between them. The goal is simple: fewer touches, shorter dwell time, faster throughput. Done right, it cuts handling cost, reduces damage exposure, and gets freight to its final destination days earlier than a routing that includes inventory storage.

Comet operates cross-docking out of its South Florida facility and pairs it with dedicated delivery on both the inbound and outbound legs. Call 786-321-0478 to discuss a cross-dock flow.

When Cross-Docking Is the Right Move

Cross-docking is not a fit for every shipment. It works best when the inbound freight is already pre-sorted by destination, when storage time would add cost without adding value, and when speed-to-shelf or speed-to-customer matters. Common patterns Comet handles in Florida:

  • Import container de-stuffing. Pull a container off PortMiami or Port Everglades, break it down at the cross-dock, and forward the contents to multiple Florida receivers the same day.
  • Retail distribution. Receive pallets from a manufacturer, sort by store, and reload onto last-mile or store-replenishment trucks.
  • E-commerce trans-loading. Move freight from line-haul trailers into smaller delivery vehicles for the final-mile leg.
  • LTL deconsolidation. Break a multi-customer LTL trailer into its component shipments and move each onto its own dedicated outbound truck.
  • Trade-show inbound staging. Receive booth freight at the cross-dock, sequence it by venue and setup time, and deliver to the convention center on the show's marshalling schedule.
  • Return consolidation. Pick up reverse logistics freight from multiple sites, sort at the cross-dock, and forward to the supplier or recycler.

How Comet Runs a Cross-Dock Move

The inbound truck arrives at our South Florida cross-dock at an appointment window set in advance. Comet receivers verify freight against the BOL, document any exceptions on the spot, and stage the pallets in the sort lane that matches the outbound plan. The outbound truck pulls to the next dock, the freight moves across, and the load departs on the timeline the customer set.

Inbound and outbound legs run dedicated when Comet is hauling both. The trucks on either side are not commingled with other customers' freight. Dispatch coordinates the timing so the outbound truck is ready when the inbound finishes, and freight does not sit waiting on a slot.

Cross-Docking Plus Dedicated Inbound and Outbound

The biggest gain from cross-docking comes when the inbound and outbound moves are also dedicated. A Florida importer that pulls drayage from PortMiami on a Comet truck, breaks the container at our cross-dock, and forwards the freight to multiple receivers on Comet outbound trucks is buying speed at every leg. There are fewer carrier hand-offs, fewer documentation gaps, and a single dispatch desk accountable for the whole flow.

Cross-Dock Equipment and Capabilities

  • Dock-high inbound and outbound receiving doors sized for tractor-trailer and straight-truck freight.
  • Pallet jacks, forklifts, and floor space for short-dwell sorting.
  • Liftgate-equipped outbound trucks where final delivery is curbside or small-commercial.
  • Trans-load equipment for moving floor-loaded freight from a container onto pallets for outbound.
  • Bonded handling for freight moving under Customs supervision, in coordination with our US Customs Bonded Carrier service.

Florida Coverage for Cross-Dock Flows

Comet cross-docking pairs with our drayage, trucking, and last-mile work across PortMiami, Port Everglades, Port of Palm Beach, and Port Tampa Bay. Common flows include port pull at PortMiami, cross-dock in South Florida, and forward delivery to Orlando, Tampa, Jacksonville, and the Treasure Coast. Pair cross-docking with warehousing, freight consolidation, or last-mile delivery when the freight profile fits.

Why Florida Shippers Choose Comet for Cross-Docking

  • Dedicated trucks on both inbound and outbound. No commingled LTL hand-offs.
  • Same dispatch desk for the whole flow. Drayage, cross-dock, and outbound all coordinated by one team.
  • Live human dispatch, 24/7. Calls answered by Comet operations in South Florida.
  • Long-term partnerships. Most Comet customers stay for years. Cross-dock pricing reflects relationship economics.
